Empathy Sparks Action
Lessons I've learned after a decade of advocating for students and teachers as a public educator in Texas
EMPATHY SPARKS ACTION:
This fight began before us and will go on after us, we are one piece of the puzzle. We do what we can for our communities now.
ARTISTS RE-VISION OUR WORLD:
Nothing sparks human emotion, compassion, and action like stories, music, movies, and media that speak to our experiences. Artists carry the collective future of our world.
TEACHERS LEAD CHANGE:
Teachers, both certified educators and natural mentors and leaders, are on the ground talking, organizing, mobilizing, and educating others about how to take action in their communities. Have a law degree? Help refugees and other immigrants at risk of deportation. Have money? Donate. Have a big social media following? Start talking.
YOU HAVE PURPOSE. DO NOT DESPAIR.
The world seems scary because it is scary. It has always been scary. You have purpose. Despair is natural, but don’t linger in it too long. Despair leads to inaction. The world needs you active. Draw, sing, write, cook a meal, donate time, donate money. Do what is right for you. Someone else’s call will not be your call. Work authentically and from your heart. Don’t worry about how people see you. Stop trying to be a “good person,” just do what you’re called to do. You’ll make mistakes along the way.
That’s okay.
I love you. Keep going.
